BRADLEY Smith has admitted that today’s scrap in Austria was all about making the best of a bad situation as he looked to move into the championship lead.
And while he fought back from eighth early on to cross the line third after a four-way scrap for the podium, the One Energy Racing rider says he’s disappointed not to come away with more in the title hunt.
“It was almost the opposite of Sachsenring – there I went from seventh to first and here I went from third to eighth in the first lap,” Smith said. “It mad my race difficult with only five laps to come back, but it was very easy to make a mistake – especially in the braking points.
“It was damage limitation honestly, I was just panicking after the first lap – down the hill, running wide, losing time, then I did it again the second lap and I’m like ‘oh no, this is going to be a rough day’.
“But somehow the track conditions, when it started to dry up a little bit, they came to me – the bike feeling came to me.
” In the first couple of laps I was maybe a bit too steady but then I felt more confident. I’m a little bit disappointed because the objective leaving this GP was to be championship leader, but we’re only five points off.”
While he may not be heading to the next round at Misano in September at the top of the points table, Smith is confident that the effort he put in today at the Red Bull Ring will pay dividends come the November series finale.
“It would have been easy to settle for fifth or sixth today, but with Mike out in front I knew I had to gain back. And with Tuuli losing some points in that one, I knew there was a chance to get an advantage there.
“I believe these are the days going to make the difference when it comes down to Valencia – these extra little points I was able to salvage.”
