SECOND place qualifier Hector Garzo has admitted he was trying to keep his Energica machine rubber side down as he stormed to the runner-up spot in today’s E-Pole session.
The Tech3 E-Racing rider clinched his P2 qualifying spot with a 1:28.243, almost eight tenths down on pole-sitter Niki Tuuli, but believes a front-row start is going to be vital for tomorrow’s eight-lap race.
“We know it’s a crazy lap, so I wanted to manage as well as possible,” Garzo revealed. “I didn’t want to crash, but also end up in the front row.
“Niki did a really good lap time I didn’t’ want to make any mistakes so I tried to do a fast lap but also take a little bit of information for tomorrow. But to be in the first row is really good – the track is tight and tomorrow’s race is going to be close.
“We have a lot to learn about MotoE but it’s quite similar to any other bike. It’s a new experience for everybody but I’m very satisfied with the job we’ve done and also the bike is truly good.”
Garzo also quashed early rumours that Michelin’s series-specific tyre wouldn’t last the distance with the heavier Energica machines.
“These tyres have the capacity to be warm in the first few corners so this is not a problem for the race. For me it’s more difficult to manage my mind.
“The only thing that’s different are the last two laps, we have to manage really good because it’s quite difficult to make a final lap fast with these tyres.”
